Debenhams

The Company

Debenhams is a leading department stores group with 147 stores across the UK and Ireland with roughly ten million square feet of shop floor space and 21,500 employees.

The company's Corporate Responsibility statement demonstrates Debenham's commitment to their wider population. “What we do at Debenhams touches millions of people: our customers, our employees, our suppliers and their employees, the communities in which our stores operate and those affected by our impact on the environment. We believe we have a responsibility to every one of these people.

The Challenge

In the mid 1990s, Debenhams sought a partner to deliver asbestos surveys from a wider structure of asbestos management, across the organisation.

With a strong sense of corporate responsibility, ensuring all Debenhams environments are safe for shoppers, staff and suppliers was an ongoing activity the company was keen to organise proactively.

Our Solution

Life Environmental has been providing asbestos management services and associated surveys for Debenhams since the 1990s.

During this time, an excellent working relationship between our team and Debenhams management and their contractors has been fostered. Strong Project Management has featured at the heart of this programme and has facilitated the co-ordination of people and resources to carry out over 109 successful branch surveys.

We have developed and launched an asbestos management plan that has generated survey re-visits in the continual quest of safety in all company premises.

All works details and information in relation to asbestos is held on the ENVACS database in the Life Environmental offices. The database is available securely to all Debenhams staff and approved contractors. The data is fluid since information included in reports is updated regularly and issued to Debenhams in a timely manner. In the event of exceptional renovation, or when repair work is scheduled, information is updated and issued immediately.

The Results

  • Risk mitigation; ensuring the organisation can continue to trade safely
  • Operational efficiencies; accurate data available instantly for effective decision-making
  • Cost effective solution; via a unified and proven asbestos management plan
